Have
you ever had trouble locating a document or file that you know you put
somewhere in/on your system? Conventional search utilities are great,
but only if you remember what you called the file in question. If
you're like me, though, you remember what you put in the file, not
what you called it. That's why I created FileParse Utility.
FileParse Utility allows you to search the contents of files for a search string that you define. The search string can be simple or complex, and the option to make the search case-sensitive is available. You can exclude certain file types from your search, limit your search to a single file type, and even include restrictions on the size of the files that are parsed. FileParse Utility also allows you to start your search in any directory, and it includes the ability to search all subdirectories below the root directory you define.
FileParse utility will report back the locations and names of files that include text that matches your search text, including the number of "hits" it finds per file. To top it off, this information can be viewed on-screen and printed out, if desired.
There are two downloads for FileParse Utility listed below. If you've previously installed a Visual Basic 5.0 program, chances are you can go with the smaller of the two downloads. If you experience errors or problems trying to use the smaller installation package, you'll need to download the full installation package (which will include all the necessary files for the program to run).
There are no instructions with FileParse Utility, so its use is at your own risk. It does not alter files -- it simply views them. If you have any thoughts on this program or discover any bugs, please let me know!
