Committee Meeting May 21 at 7:30 in the Scout House:  Topics of interest.

Mulch Sale
The scouts have been working hard this past month on the 2008 mulch sale. Orders are rolling in fast, so we may need to step it up over the next couple of weeks. Scouts who are low on hours should take advantage of more available opportunities to get their hours in. So far, the scouts have sold over 2500 bags and have brought in over $11,000.00. This sale is the primary source of funding for the summer Venture trip which will be at Warren Dunes State Park in 2008. The troop is planning to carry over some of the proceeds from this year’s sale to fund a 2009 trip to Alaska.

Urban Outing and Hike
A ten mile urban hike is scheduled for Sunday, May 18th. Please note that the date has been changed due to some schedule conflicts. This will take place in the downtown Cincinnati area and will be the third of five required hikes for the Hiking Merit Badge. Included in this hike will be a tour of the Masonic Lodge and a stop at Carew Tower’s observation deck (Cincinnati’s tallest building).

Memorial Day Parade
Troop 417 will continue it’s long tradition of Marching in the Glendale Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26th. The scouts should wear their full Class A uniforms for this event. Full Uniform includes pants and scarves.

Welcome New Scouts
Troop 417 is proud to announce the addition of four new scouts to the ranks. The new recruits are Jake, Lucas, William and Hunter . All four of these young men have completed their terms in Webelos and have crossed over to the Boy Scouts.

Class 2 & 3 Health Forms
Any Scout or Adult who is planning on going to Summer Camp or the Troop Venture Trip will need a Class 3 Health form. Class 3.  Go ahead and make the appointment with your doctor to have this done. Make sure to make copies! Scouts going to Summer Camp will need Class 2 Health forms.

Order of the Arrow Election
Three of Troop 417’s scouts were elected by their peers to the Order of the Arrow. This is a national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America. An OA call-out ceremony was performed at the Spring Camporee in which Jeremy Flury was officially recognized as a prospective member of this elite organization. Jeremy, along with Bobby Cook and Andy Piotrowski, will need to complete a weekend long ordeal during the course of this summer to officially be recognized as members of The Order of the Arrow.

Advancement

Beginning this week we will be stepping up our focus on advancement.  At last week’s meeting we reminded the scouts that they are required to bring their books to each meeting.  We will be working with each scout to give them the direction they need to advance to the next level.

BB Gun Safety

The Crew from Red River Gorge backpacked 2 miles and hiked another 9.  They braved the rain and had a great time.

Warren Dunes State Park
Troop 417 will be heading to Warren Dunes in southwest Michigan on the coast of Lake Michigan for this year’s venture trip. This park is adjacent to Indiana Dunes Nation Lakeshore and provides a more remote location with higher dunes and less restrictions than the National Lakeshore. The dates for this trip are Monday, June 9th through Sunday, June 15th. The list of proposed activities for this trip include: swimming, dune-boarding, hiking, Walleye fishing, kayaking and wind surfing. Also included on this trip will be a train trip to Chicago where the troop will spend two nights. This will include a full day of urban adventure and a day at Six Flags America amusement park.

Summer Camp
Troop 417 currently has five scouts committed to this year’s summer camp. If any scouts are not signed up and wish to attend, it is imperative that they see Mr. Sause at the meeting tonight to discuss. Summer camp is July 20 – 26.
