According to a list of Ex-Confederate Soldiers living in 1898 in Buchanan Co., Va., Charles Vandike was a Private in Co. I, James S. Ratliff's 10th Kentucky Cavalry, enlisted in 1861 and served 4 years. (List compiled by L. W. Compton, Commissioner of Revenue, under the provisions of an act of the General Assembly of Virginia passed 25 Jan 1898 and filed 1 July 1898).

        From the Confederate Service Records (National Archives) Charles Vandyke, 4th Corporal, Co. I.; Capt. John S. Ratliff's Co. (H); and May's Regiment Mounted Riflemen. This company subsequently became Co. I, 10th Regiment (Diamonds) Kentucky Cavalry. His name appears as "Chas. Vandike" in a column of names present on Company muster Roll for 31 July 1863. States that he enlisted for 3 years by John S. Ratliff on 1 July 1863 at Grundy in Buchanan Co., Va.

Charles P. married three times. He married, first, MARTHA MCGLOTHLIN before 1847. Martha was born in Russell Co., Va. 17 Feb 1818. Martha was the daughter of Jacob M. MCGLOTHLIN and Elizabeth CLARK. Martha died 26 Sep 1862 at 44 years of age. Her body was interred in Buchanan Co., Va.

The section of Buchanan County that our family came from used to be part of Russell County (until the formation of Buchanan County in 1858).  I have emailed information to you about the family. Hello again Cindy! This is what I have for Cora and Tucker:  Cora Ellen Blankenship Vandyke b. 4/14/1910 in Buchanon County, Va. d. 6/07/1990 in Richlands, Va. (Buchanon and Russell the same county?)  James Eli (Ely?) "Tucker" Vandyke b. 6/10/1902 in Russell County Va., d. 7/27/1967 in Richlands. His parents were Charles F. Vandyke and Ella Louise Whitt Vandyke.

Cora and Tuckers children:

Earl Houston Vandyke 9/29/29 - 2/27/1975 m. Ola Gay Ball
Frankie Vandyke m. Hurley Absher

Oh! and my great-grandfather gave the girls pet names. Some people only know them by these: Frankie (Pot), Rosetta (Toehead), Joan (Sheep), Frances (Coon), Nancy (Honey).  WHAT WAS HE THINKING!!  I hope this helps. Hi Cindy! My Grandparents were Cora Vandyke and James (Tucker) Vandyke. I don't remember Wiley, Ocie and Virgie because we moved away in 1964. Cora and James lived in and around Richlands, VA. I don't have everything together yet and I will E-Mail you again. Do you want birthdates, childeren, etc? This is very exciting because I just started my search for my ancestors and relatives! My great-grandparents were Calvin & Lillie B. Mullins Blankenship.

They had the following children:
Wiley m. Marie Vandyke
Cora Ellen m. James (Tucker) Vandyke
Pearl Margaret m. Mardy Lewis
Louisa Catherine m. Johnson Smith
Johnson Bud m. Hester Street
Watie Emeline m. (1) Earnest Shortridge (2) Holiday O'Quinn (3) Everett Cart
Stella m. James White
Virgie Ethel m. Lee Ray
Ocie Mae m. Estil (Eck) Hale
Fannie m. Glen Ratliff

Wiley, Ocie, Virgie, and Cora moved to Tazewell County, VA after marrying.

Any information on Wiley & Marie and Tucker & Cora would be appreciated. I will gladly share what I have on the rest of the family.

Yes, here is what I have:  GEORGE W.[4] VANDYKE (son of Charles P.[3] VAN DIKES, son of Charles[2] VANDIKE, son of John[1]) was born in Buchanan Co., Va. 25 AUG 1864. George died 1933 at 68 years of age. He married twice. He married MARGARET SELF. He married LOUISA AMERICA PHILLIPS 1885. Louisa was born in Buchanan Co., Va. 1868. Louisa was the daughter of Jackson PHILLIPS and Mary Jane VANCE.  I have their children as follows:

       i.        ARTHUR.
       ii.        MARY (birth date unknown). She married ROBERT FLETCHER .
       iii.        JENNY (birth date unknown). She married IRA COLLEY .
       iv.        GROVER (birth date unknown). He married MAY CHILDRESS . May was the daughter of Ben CHILDRESS.
       v.        LAURA (birth date unknown). She married TOM MCGLOTHLIN . Tom was the son of Lewis MCGLOTHLIN.
       vi.        VICTORIA (birth date unknown). She married JOSEPH HENRY LOONEY . Joseph was the son of James
LOONEY.
       vii.        WILLIAM (birth date unknown). He married BERTHA RATLIFF . Bertha was the daughter of Abednego Benjamin RATLIFF and Lydia Margaret VANDYKE.
       viii. TOY (birth date unknown). She married JESS CHILDRESS . Jess was the son of Harve CHILDRESS.
       ix.        GLENN was born 24 Oct 1891.

Jackson Phillips and Mary Jane Vance were my g-grandparents. I spoke ( e-mail) with a distant cousin a few months ago, Larry Moore and he told me America Ann, as he said they they called her, either fell or jumped into their well and drowned. Larry's mother is still living, (90) and remembers this story. I just have her as America. I can't thank you enough, I really appreciate this information. If you need any info on anything I might have, please let me know.  Carol
