Note:  Within the family records of Israel 2 Vandike was recorded that John had married a Sue!  Can it be that John Vandike was married twice; first to Sue and then Charlotte Miller, or was Charlotte named Charlotte Sue Miller!  Additional research into the revolation of Sue and Charlotte ia needed. John Vandike listed below may of had two brothers, named; Henry, and AndrewVandike:
 
 

1.John ¹ Vandike  (Unknown⁰ Vandike) was born before 1765.  John died 1820 at 55 years of age.  John married Charlotte.   Charlotte's maiden name Miller and her first name of Charity and Charlotte are from David Burke [another VanDyke family researcher].  Prior to contact with him, we thought that Charity and Charlotte were two different women. 

John first appears on Russell County records in 1785 when signing a petition to form Tazewell County.  He appears on personal property tax lists in 1787 paying taxes on 200 acres of land.  In 1790 he paid taxes on these 200 acres of land plus 76 acres he had obtained as an assignee of "Gravat".  He continued to pay tax on these acreages through 1799.  He was still on the Russell County tax list in 1802 but did not pay there.  He paid taxes in Tazewell County from 1802 through 1810.  Two [2] John Vandikes (father & son?) paid taxes from 1811-1820. Each year from 1793 through 1799, he appears on the Personal Property Tax List in the Upper District of Russell Co., Va.  In all years, except 1799 he paid taxes on one (1) tithable.  In 1799, he paid taxes on 2 tithables.  Will Webb was listed as Tax Commissioner for 1795 and 1796.

Land Grants - Land Purchased from the government by John Vandike

Grant Book 29, Page 98, 17 May 1793. Washington Co., Va.  Henry See, Esq. Governor of Commonwealth of Va. "by virture of a certificate in right of settlement granted by the Commissioners for the District of Washington & Montgomery and in consideration of the ancient composition of 15 shillings sterling paid by John Vandyke a certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred and fifty acres by survey bearing date the twenty eighth day of April one thousand seven hundred and eighty three lying and being in the County of Washington on the south side of Indian Creek a north branch of the upper North Fork of the Clinch River and bounded as follows to with, Beginning.

Grant Book 29, Page 105, 17 May 1793 - Washington Co., Va.  76 acres on both sides of Gravatts Branch the waters of Clinch River.

Grant Book 42, Page 379, 25 Jun 1799 - Russell Co., Va.  50 acres on Indian Creek a branch of Clinch River. David Burke [family researcher] says that it is believed that these two patents (the one in 1793 and the one in 1799) are for the same tract of land (just filed for in both counties).

In 1799, Tazewell County was formed from Russell and on 27 Dec. 1808, three deeds were recorded from John Vandike and Charlotte his wife to his sons:  James, John Jr.,  and Charles Vandike for 69 acres each.  In 1819, he deeded 69 acres of land to his son, Israel..

In the 1820 there were the following three (3) Vandike/Vandyke's living in Virginia:

1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, and 1 male 45 and over
There were no females in the house. (This would be John Sr., John Jr., and Israel)

JAMES VANDIKE
1 male under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45
2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45

 CHARLES VANDIKE
3 males under 10, 1 male 26-45
3 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45

JOHN ¹VANDIKE and CHARLOTTE MILLER had the following family: 

i.  JAMES ² VANDIKE was born circa 1785.  James died after 1840 in Missouri.  James married SUSANNAH MOORE between 1805-1807 in Tazewell County, Tazewell Virginia.  She was born 1790 in NC, and died Aft 1860. 

ii.  CHARLES ² VANDIKE was born 1786.  Charles married ELIZABETH MOORE. 

iii. JOHN JR. ² VANDIKE was born 1789. 

iv.  CHARITY ² VANDIKE was born 1791.  Charity died on December 30, 1855 in Tazewell Co., Virginia., at 64 years of age.  She married JEREMIAH CLAYPOOL. 

vi.  NANCY ² VANDIKE was born 1795.  Nancy died in August 1856 at 61 years of age.  She married RUBEN PRUETT. 

vii.  ISRAEL ² VANDIKE was born 1801.  Israel married MARY POLLY BEAVERS in 1822 in Tazewell Virginia. 

viii.   SALLY ² VANDIKE (birth date unknown).  Sally  married HENRY BLANKENSHIP on October 30, 1870.

In looking through my records I found the following:

MILTON was born 1815. He married JUDGEZA [this is a guess at the name - the person who found it could not read it clearly] MUNCY 31 DEC 1835.

This Milton was a son of James Vandike and Susannah Moore. James was a son of John and Charity Vandike.

John Vandike had just one wife, Charlotte. Her nickname was Charity; 
hence the confusion. Their children were: James, b. abt. 1785; 
Charles, b. abt. 1786; John, b. 1789; Charlotte, b. 1791; Nancy, 
b. 1795; Israel, b. 1801; Sally, b. unk.; and possibly a girl 
named Elizabeth. All were born in what is now Tazewell Co., VA.
