Amateur radio, often called ham radio, is both a hobby and a service in which participants, called "hams", use various types of radio communications equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public services, recreation and self-training. Amateur radio operation is licensed by an appropriate government entity for example, by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) in the United States as coordinated through the ITU (International Telecommunications Union).
An estimated two million people throughout the world are regularly involved with amateur radio.
The term "amateur" does not imply a lack of skill or quality, but rather that amateur radio and its operators work outside of an official, governmental or commercial capacity.
Jerry Smyth, N8ULU, had a QSO (contact) with the MIR space station prior to the days it was vacated and then burnt up on re-entry! Jerry was calling CQ on a MIR pass one day and spoke to Norm Thagard and you can hear it for yourself (left click cool below). The MIR space station used to transmit on 145.80 and listen on 145.20 Mhz. Today, Hams can talk directly to astronauts aboard the ISS (International Space Staion).
