Reflections on the Weavers
of the Southern Highlands
During the last decade, Philis
has researched the weaving from the southern Appalachian Mountain
area. She will share her research with us and as we listen to
her speak and view her historic photographs, we will become aware
of the tremendous debt we owe the weavers who kept alive weaving,
established a model for craft education, pioneered in craft marketing
and founded many craft organizations. Philis will invite us to
examine the Fireside Industries of Berea College in Kentucky;
the Pi Beta Phi's Arrowcraft of Gatlinburg, Tennessee; the Weaving
Room of Crossnore School, the Penland Weavers, and Allanstand,
all in North Carolina, and the Rabun Weavers of Georgia. What
a wonderful opportunity this affords us to gain an insight into
the mountain weaving activities of these centers! Philis has received
numerous grants to enable her to do her research and collect her
materials. She has published over 90 articles in national magazines,
has served as juror in numerous exhibitions and has presented
over 45 workshops throughout the U.S. and abroad.
A Loom with a View Sheila O'Hara is a textile artist
who weaves first in her mind, then projects the images onto her
high-tech loom. When she sits down to work, it is with a computer
and keyboard mounted just above the shafts. What she creates
is distinguished by its spectacular use of color, innovative designs
and wry sense of humor. Her imaginary landscapes depict ideas
about life and reality in a slightly altered state. Dinosaurs
play ring toss on the San Francisco Pyramid. Dogs tour Europe
in Mercedes and gondolas. This daring sense of play reminds us
not to take ourselves too seriously. Sheila's weavings have been
exhibited internationally and are in many museum and corporate
collections, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco,
The American Craft Museum, New York, and the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt,
New York. She has taught workshops and lectured in the United
States, Canada, Germany, and Australia.
