S201 CREATIVITY IN PATTERN WEAVING
Philis was educated at the
Art Institute of Chicago and Winthrop College in South Carolina. She has
chosen weaving as her expressive medium. She weaves wall textiles utilizing
complex weave structures in a two-dimensional format. She writes about
weaving and her experiences as an artist and art critic. During the last
decade, she has researched the weaving from the southern Appalachian Mountain
area. She has received numerous honors including the HGA Certificate of
Excellence and has exhibited in over 200 juried, invitational and solo
shows. She maintains a studio in her home in Lexington, Kentucky.

S201 CREATIVITY IN PATTERN WEAVING Saturday Afternoon Mini-Session, 2:00-4:30 A slide/lecture format will be used to make specific points, but the main learning will be through hands-on projects. Through a series of exercises, participants will consider the different stages of development of a weaving project. Resources on weaving and creativity and techniques for extracting valuable information from diverse materials will be examined. Supplies: 2 dozen fine point markers or colored
pencils.
Several of the different weaving centers of the Appalachian Mountains will be explored through slide/tape presentations which use historic photographs and sound recordings of the weavers. Actual items woven at the centers will be available for examination. Each participant will receive a booklet of drafts of popular patterns. Supplies: None
