W01 CONTROLLED DYEING WITH FIBER REACTIVE DYES
Betsy has been exploring the art and craft of weaving for 29 years. Over the course of this journey she has discovered her home territory to be double-faced weave structures. She has combined the study of various types of double layered fabrics with the study of color and dyeing and uses both to create unusual and magical fabrics to wear and some wall pieces, too. She earned an MFA degree in textiles from Indiana University in 1980 and has taught workshops on dyeing and weaving throughout the U.S. She is co-author of Hands on Dyeing. She currently lives in Boulder and is a Customer Service Rep. for Schacht Spindle Company.

W01 CONTROLLED DYEING WITH FIBER REACTIVE DYES
A three-day workshop exploring the many possibilities of dyeing with fiber reactive dyes, including dyeing cotton, wools, linens and silks. We will dye a range of controlled colors using the simplified mixing and measuring techniques from the book Hands on Dyeing. The workshop will begin with a lecture overview of the principles of controlled dyeing and the preparation process. Then, sample skeins of yarn will be prepared for dyeing. Several dye runs will be completed during the workshop for a total of more than 100 color samples. Each participant will take home a dyer's notebook containing a variety of color and value progressions to serve as a resource for further experimentation with dyeing. Supplies: Rubber gloves; apron or old clothes; pkg. of 3 x 5 cards; hole punch; 2 or 3 one oz. skeins of yarn to be dyed, natural color and fiber only; notebook; scissors.
S102 INTRODUCTION TO DOUBLE DYEING
An introduction to the exciting system of double-dyeing in which a wide range of related colors are created, using only a few dyepots. The lecture demonstration includes basic information on how to use fiber-reactive dyes. The non-reversible quality of these dyes makes them suitable for this double-dye technique. An overdye run is completed during the seminar and samples from the run are available for take-home. Samples from other double-dye runs are available as examples, as well as a variety of projects made from yarns and fabrics from double-dye runs. Supplies: Notebook (with paper), pen, pencil; scissors, hole punch.
S302 COMBINING WARP-FACED AND WEFT-FACED WEAVING. Class is closed.
A presentation of some of the ways of combining warp and weft faced weave structures on a single face of a fabric. These double-sided fabrics provide many interesting possibilities for the handweaver with four or more shafts. Students will study ways of adapting familiar weave structures and inventing combinations of weave structures. Unique design possibilities will be presented. In addition, the special qualities, functional and otherwise, of the double-faced fabrics will be discussed. Fabrics, samples, and weave drafts will be available for study and a set of drafts will be provided for take-home. Supplies: Notebook; pencil; graph paper; scissors.
