W03 TARTAN WEAVING Pre-Conference Workshop, July 13-15 This workshop is basically twill weaving with a program on tartan history and a smattering of Scottish history. There are many handouts about tartan dress, making kilts and recipes. We weave 10-20 tartans, depending on number of students. Students move from loom to loom, weaving 4"- 6" square samples. They learn how to design tartan, how to register a design, and the many motifs and color classifications of tartan. This is a very educational program and a good workout with twill. Throughout the three days, Scottish music is played and students may bring their own tapes. If time allows, students may tell quick stories about their Scottish backgrounds and may show anything Scottish they have brought to class. Supplies: A 4 harness loom-floor or table. A supply list and a detailed materials list will be sent to you as well as a warp, made up and ready to put on the loom, with threading directions.

S203 TARTAN WEAVING Saturday Afternoon Mini-Session, 2:00 – 4:30 A Repeat—See S104
This seminar will be a little different from most. There will be a little history of “Why rag rugs?”. Most of the time will be spent on questions and answers. The attendees will be involved in the discussion—a sort of round robin group, with successes and problems told and discussed. There will be information on cloth—patterned and plain, warps and epi, designing, making room-sized rugs and much more. Supplies: Note-taking materials
