Sigrid Piroch
Foxburg, Pennsylvania

Sigrid is a textile artist who brings with her a wide range of fiber skills, together with an enthusiasm for the creative process, love of beautiful fabric and a commitment to the preservation of our textile heritage. She teaches a number of varied textile topics, spanning all levels from the “basics” through “complex.” Sigrid is Director of her own textile Arts Studio in Foxburg, has taught workshops on textile design, handweaving, handspinning and computer design for over 20 years in the U.S. and abroad and she has taught at MWA conferences and Convergences. She was President of the Complex Weavers, on their Board for 6 years and an HGA Rep for 8 years. Her book, Design Challenges, was published in 1991, the first to sell with a computer disk. Sigrid has alpha and beta tested software and hardware for handweavers since 1985. She is Weftalk’s “Computer Wizard” on Weaver Magazine’s web page.


W07 COLOR AND DESIGN CHALLENGES
Pre-Conference Workshops, July 13-15

Explore and get a working handle on color and design in fiber. Using simple weaves, mostly 4 harness, learn to design and weave effective designer, art, decorative and functional fabrics. Deal with color reality, pattern and texture, quantitative and qualitative variables, negative and positive space, original plaids, fractals and more, using various color systems and tricks to create visual illusion in cloth. Slide view, tune in and weave classic and classy examples of color work developed out of early 20th century weavers.

Supplies:4; 6; 8 harness looms. Set-up sheets will be sent to students in advance; bring all supplies needed for weaving.
Fee: $6.50 for prepared wire-bound booklet.
Level: All weaving levels will benefit.

Saturday Morning Mini-Session, 9:00 – 11:30 

Come for an overview of all the major textile drafting and design software, plus other software adaptations for textiles with the PC with Mac crossovers. Catch up on the cutting edge of this technology for textile artists. Compare the features and cost of each. Learn to access the Web and its awesome resources. Peruse the large display of program information, color printouts and comparison fabrics. Unique booklet with extensive up-to-date references included.

Sunday Afternoon Mini-Session, 2:00 – 4:30

What do you do when you see a wonderful woven fabric and want to weave it but there is no written draft to assist you? Learn how to analyze and re-weave simple, layered and complex fabrics by traditional methods as well as specialized methods developed by talented weavers. Learn to quickly memorize and document them. Evaluate your strengths by playing “Name That Weave”. Now weave them again for yourself.
