W08 NAVAJO RUG WEAVING. Class is closed. S116 NAVAJO WEAVING DEMONSTRATION. Class is closed. S216 NAVAJO TEXTILES AND HISTOR S413 NAVAJO RUG WEAVING DEMONSTRATION Since the 1970’s, Frances has
been helping others learn about Navajo textiles and weaving techniques.
She teaches classes at the Madison Area Technical College and conducts
workshops throughout the states, many being held at adult education arts
and crafts centers. Ms. Potter served as guest curator of important exhibitions
of American Indian art at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Platteville.
She is author of Navajo Textile Designs, a pictograph of weaving instructions
which illustrates Navajo weaving from beginning to end. Weaving the rugs
and learning this fine art has led to restoration work. She has restored
hundreds of pieces, many of museum quality. Her work has received top awards
and has been exhibited numerous times.

W08 NAVAJO RUG WEAVING. Class is closed. Pre-Conference workshops, July 13-15 Learn the traditional tapestry skills of rug weaving in this workshop. You will learn the fundamentals and techniques of rug weaving in the traditional Navajo style. You will begin to weave your own rug using authentic Navajo patterns and yarns. Frances will guide you through your project as well as give a history and background of Navajo textiles to develop appreciation for the striking beauty of this art form. All looms, tools, supplies and yarn are furnished. Supplies:Scissors; rubber bands; tape measure; 1/4" graph paper.
S116 NAVAJO WEAVING DEMONSTRATION. Class is closed. Saturday Morning Mini-Session, 9:00 – 11:30 This class will explore Navajo weaving fundamentals and techniques. Every step of the Navajo warping and weaving process will be demonstrated. It will include a spinning demonstration of preparing a good warp and twining. Tapestry techniques and pattern drafting will also be demonstrated. Supplies: None.
S216 NAVAJO TEXTILES AND HISTOR Saturday Afternoon Mini-Session, 2:00 – 4:30 This session will provide participants with an appreciation for Navajo textiles. Included will be a slide presentation and discussion of Navajo history as it relates to Navajo textiles. Traditional and contemporary patterns and regional styles found in Navajo rugs will be considered. It will also include the instructor's involvement in the weaving of textiles. She will bring rugs from her collection to share and she encourages participants to bring rugs to critique and share. Supplies: None.
