S223 FABRIC DESIGN FOR CLOTHING
Saturday Afternoon Mini-Session, 2:00 – 4:30

This seminar discusses the problem of how to bridge the transition from a concept in your head of how you want your fabric to look to its ultimate interpretation in fiber. Attention is given to the basic rules for cloth construction, how selection of fiber and structure mutually determine how a textile drapes and the relationship of technique and appropriate design.

Supplies: Graph paper for drafting; pencils with erasers.
Fee: None.
Level: All.

M610 A CUT ABOVE AND BEYOND
Sunday Maxi Sessions, 9:00 – 11:30 AM and 2:00 – 4:30 PM

In this exciting day-long session, Virginia will premiere six new clothing designs that reflect fashion’s current trends. Participants will construct scale paper models of each design, select one to execute in “muslin”, learn how to adjust each to personal configuration, how to apply couturier finishing touches to differentiate each garment, how to achieve the right “hand” of fabric, and how to select appropriate weave structures. You will emerge with an innovative approach to garment construction and enough information and ideas to go home and create a stylish wardrobe. Virginia’s clothing collection will be available for inspiration and modeling.

Supplies: 3 yards of inexpensive striped fabric; portable sewing machine, if you have one; graph paper; “Scotch” tape; scissors; pins; sewing thread; colored pencils or pens.
Fee: None.
Level: All.
