What Is World Anvil?

World Anvil is intended for both players and game masters, and is adaptable to any game created using Open Game Content. At its heart World Anvil is a database that contains, and is designed to work with, OGC (Open Gaming Content) material covered by the Open Gaming License created by Our Favorite Gaming Company (who shall remain nameless in compliance with the OGL).

It ties together everything in the System Reference Document (SRD) as well as going beyond the SRD into the realm of world design. Thus it is suitable (along with supporting software such as Microsoft Office™ and Profantasy's Campaign Cartographer™) for creating modules, rule books, or even whole game systems based on the SRD and OGC.

We plan to offer World Anvil in three different levels with differing price points and capabilities. World Anvil can thus serve the needs of the most casual and/or cash-strapped gamer, yet also be useful to the professional game designer. Please note the software is being re-written as we speak, so divisions between the levels may disappear entirely. The new design is far more integrated than the old, and more flexible. Check here regularly for updates!

World Anvil Requirements

World Anvil needs the following hardware and software to run:

Pentium III running at 600Mhz (1Ghz recommended)
256MB of RAM (512MB recommended)
400MB of disk space
Windows 2000 service pack 4 or Windows XP with Service Pack 2. We are currently evaluating plans to run on Windows NT 4 and the Windows 95/98/ME systems as well.
Unfortunately we can't (and have no plans to ever) support the following operating systems:
     BeOS
     Linux (any distribution)
Mac OS version 1 thru 9
     Mac OS/X
     Unix (any version)
     Windows 3.0 or 3.1
Windows CE (runs PDAs and other mobile devices)
Microsoft .Net version 2.0. If you don't already have it World Anvil will install it for you, but this requires you either log in as administrator or use Run As to install World Anvil as administrator. Most users who run Windows XP Home are already running as administrator so this won't be an issue for them.
SQL Server Express. If you don't already have it World Anvil will install it for you, but this requires you either log in as administrator or use Run As to install World Anvil as administrator. Most users who run Windows XP Home are already running as administrator so this won't be an issue for them.

In other words, if you don't have .Net 2.0 or SQL server installed, World Anvil can automatically install them for you--but it requires administrator authorization to do so. Once World Anvil is installed you do not need administrator privileges to run it, only to install it, and only if you haven't already installed .Net version 2.0 or SQL Server Express.

We are in the process of redesigning World Anvil for Access 2007 runtime environment, which means World Anvil should run on any system capable of running Office 2007.
