We believe video production should be fun. If you’re not enjoying yourself, then why do it? Part of the fun in production is making it look great. Good production values such as lighting, photography and sound make the production. With an attention to detail, I strive to make every shot look it’s best. The fun is the challenge of making this happen.

During my time at WKRC in Cincinnati, I got to do some really great projects. My favorite is a one-hour special celebrating the 50th anniversary of the station. I volunteered for the project in a staff meeting one day. No one else was interested but I thought it would be a cool project. We had three weeks to put this together so I was able to bring on another producer who is a fantastic writer/producer. We got to work. After three weeks of 15 hour days, it barely got on the air. As a matter of fact5, we were editing up to airtime. Would I do this again? You bet! But next time….can we have a few more days?

The other clip is an HD special I produced. We didn’t have much of a budget, so we relied on mostly existing material. We shot the anchors in the studio and the rest was pretty pictures and music. I did an off-line edit on the AVID the exported the EDL to a Discrete Fire HD system for the final edit. Needless to say, the HD final looked awesome!

Sometimes all you have is a script, a logo and little direction to make a commercial. So, you find a cut of music and maybe some archive footage and off you go. Othertimes you have a decent budget and can spend time on good production values. Then again, in the case of the Vito's spot, a small budget, a Cannon XL1 and a few good lights turned out a spot that looked like a big budget production. Attention to detail made this commercial work. Vito was very happy.

Who says corporate video has to be buttoned down and dull? Some of the most creative pieces I've worked on never went on the air. In these examples there are two cuts that are my favorites. The first is a music video for Sunglass Hut used for their conference. I cut that one on site using Final Cut Pro and their chroma key filters. I was given two backgrounds for the whole thing but made it work by manipulating it in many different ways. It turned out great and the client was very happy. The other clip is from Xavier University where we did tour of the Communications Arts Department. I had virtually no budget, so we got students. The idea was to tour the CA Department via a geeky tour guide with a bullhorn. It ended up being really funny...and it won a Telly!
